Uganda Jan. 2014: Queen Elizabeth Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is geographically the western arm of the African Rift Valley savanna. It once held large numbers of big game animals and predators. War, poaching, and trophy-hunting by the Brits wiped out much of the wildlife over the past decades. But left to its own devices and protected from encroaching human population, the area should see the wildlife continue to rebound. The critical issue is how to keep the predators and elephants from the locals' livestock and crops.

Approaching the park. U.N. refugee relief operations nearby.
